Individual Counseling

Many people who seek counseling have normal challenges of life that sometimes can become overwhelming. Counseling is a unique relationship that involves a professional with specialized training who assists you in identifying your personal and professional goals and helps you outline the most meaningful ways of achieving them. The length of counseling depends on the client and the magnitude of the challenges that they are facing. Each individual session is 50 minutes. Counseling can occur weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly depending on the issues.

•  Depression/Anxiety
•  Relationship/ Intimacy
•  Codependency
•  Divorce Recovery/Support
•  Grief & Loss

Pre-marital and Couples Counseling

Relationships can be complicated. The levels of stress for couples today are far greater than the levels of stress for previous generations. Over time, needs and resources of each partner evolve. Pre-marital and Couples counseling provides an opportunity for couples to identify potential or current stressors that occur in most relationships and find meaningful ways of resolving conflicts effectively. Some benefits of couples counseling include:

•  Improving communication and listening skills
•  Increasing the couple's ability to understand one another
•  Exploring sensitive and/or deeply held past issues
•  Changing old behavior patterns and developing new ones
•  Coping more effectively with family life transitions

Group Sessions

Research indicates that groups can be just as effective, and in some cases, more effective than individual counseling, particularly when the issues involve relationships with others. Groups allow for individuals with similar challenges to cultivate trust and work together for mutual benefit. Individual group members experience support, understanding, and encouragement from one another. Committed attendance is itself therapeutic, as accountability is also a key benefit.

One of the biggest benefits of group counseling is that an individual realizes that he or she is not alone, which often brings about a huge sense of relief! Fees for group therapy are usually much less than for individual therapy. Most insurance companies cover group counseling, depending upon your plan. Please call your insurer for specifics. For more information about current groups and fees, please call us at 770-642-4239 Ext: 32 or Email: cuwilliams.lpc@gmail.com .

Participants will need to be fully committed and involved in weekly, individual counseling in order to supplement the information learned in the skills group. All four (4) modules of DBT, including Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation , and Interpersonal Effectiveness will be covered in the group. EMDR

What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy, developed by Francine Shapiro, as an effective, rapid, brain-based method of healing trauma. EMDR enables people to manage and sometimes heal the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life events. Extensive research (over 20 controlled studies) shows that with EMDR clients can experience similar benefits of therapy that ordinarily took months, if not years, with traditional talk therapy.

How does EMDR help?
Neuroscience is only beginning to understand that our brains, are self-healing! Under the right conditions, our brains can heal from very distressful life events—and often without the use of medication. Neuroscientific research has demonstrated that a traumatic event can be frozen in time within the body’s memory system, so that when the event is recalled, one relives the images, sounds and emotions of the original event with a similar degree of intensity. This can be extremely disturbing and can often interfere with one’s ability to relate to the world, themselves, and to other people. It is widely believed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. The brain’s information processing system is adaptive and naturally moves toward the direction of optimal mental health. If the system is blocked by the effects of a disturbing event, the result can be intense emotional agony. Once that block is removed, the natural healing process resumes.

How long will I need to be in therapy?
It depends. A typical EMDR session can last from 60-90 minutes. The number of EMDR sessions depends on the type of issue, life circumstances and the number of previous traumas you have experienced. However, after about three sessions, many clients report reduced intensity of specific traumatic events, including very distressful childhood memories.

I don’t like to talk much about painful events. Will I need to?
One of the unique aspects of EMDR is that you don’t necessarily have to discuss distressful memories in great detail, which can actually be re-traumatizing for many clients. Clients may want to simply share a general outline of the traumatic memory with their therapist, rather than go into specifics.
What problems can EMDR treat?
EMDR has been proven to effectively treat the symptoms associated with the following conditions:
• Panic attacks
• Complicated grief
• Dissociative disorders
• Disturbing memories
• Phobias
• Pain disorders
• Performance anxiety
• Stress reduction
• Sexual abuse
